Arcadia magazine - Aug 2001

News flash:  Cammy's the coolest character
The news in this magazine is one of the most exciting things that's happening in gaming for a long time (in my opinion).  A few weeks ago you might have read my rant about the lack of good fighting games, but it looks like the drought is ending.  There's so much other great news in this issue... let's get to it!!
The cover story of this issue is the big summer for 3D fighting games, which will feature Tekken 4 and Virtua Fighter 4.  There's a little comparison and history of the two games, and then they get into some in-depth info on the games...
Tekken 4
On June 20, 2001, Namco finally released the first playable version of Tekken 4, and it's extremely impressive from what's shown in the magazine.  First off, they profile some of the new characters.  First is Dean who looks like a blond-haired, Hawaiian-shirted fighter.  The screen caps show him doing some strange dodging moves.  Second is Steve Fox, and he's kinda small, has longer blond hair, and wears boxing gloves (he's the guy on the cover of the magazine).  To be honest, he doesn't look very interesting.  Third is Christine Monteiro, and she looks like a Brazilian girl and yet another Capoera fighter.  She's wears a tight shinny silver pants and a sparkly bikini top.  And fourth is Craig Marduk, who looks like a burly bald pro-wrestler.   None of the four new characters are really anything special from what I've seen so far, but I'll hold judgement on them until I see more.
After the new characters, they show some of the oldies but goodies.  Kazuya is back, but he's older, has a scarred face, and one red eye.  Hwoarang is back more or less unchanged.  Lin Xiaoyu, is back and grown up... and she looks great!!  I always thought she was the most fun to play, but I thought she looked really lame.  There's the new version over on the left, click on the picture and take a look for yourself.  I think I've got a new favorite Tekken character!   The only thing that bothers me are the cutsy pink bunnies on her gloves!  Anyhow, Paul Phoenix is back and more or less the same.  Law is back with a handlebar mustache.  King is back and more or less the same, but his character art shows him with some strange black hair on is back?!  Yoshimitsu is back, and believe it or not, he's 10 times the freak he was before... he now has two dragonfly wings!   I can't wait to see him.

WOW, whatta improvement!!!!!
super-improved
T4 Lin Xiaoyu!

There are also some pictures of the stages, and although they don't look especially interesting, it looks like there will be uneven terrain, so that should change the gameplay.
Virtua Fighter 4
News of Virtua Fighter 4 has been out a long time, but I haven't seen many details yet (and haven't cared all that much).  This month's Arcadia showcases some of the 2 new characters that'll make their debut in the game... Vanessa Lewis, and Lei-Fei.  Venessa is a muscular girl with dark skin and long white hair, and she wears a strapless-bra thing, and tight shorts.  Lei-Fei looks like a bald Chinese monk who's wearing a buncha robes 'n rags 'n stuff.  Everybody else seems to be back, and they all seem more or less as the were.
Sorry for the lackluster review, but Virtua fighter doesn't inspire any type of emotion in me... I don't hate it, and I don't really like it, so it's hard to talk about because I just don't care.
Capcom vs SNK 2
Yeah, a new game with Cammy!!  ^_^  There's her character art to the left, it's another classic!  Click on it to get a better look.  Anyhow, not only is Cammy back, but so are a ton of other characters!  The most notable of the new characters are Eagle from the original SF, Haomaru, Rock Howard, Rolento, Hibiki from Last Blade, Maki from Final Fight (cool!), Chang (yeah! ^_^), Joe Higashi, Dan, and the absolutely miserable SF3 version of Chun Li.
Heil Vega!
There are lots of screenshots and other stuff on the game, but since there's already so much coverage of the game elsewhere, I'm not gonna go into it.  I'll just say that the game looks pretty cool so far, and from what they say, the various changes in gameplay will make it a lot better to play too.   This seems more like what Capcom vs SNK should have been in the first place.   I think the rushed the first one (even though it was delayed a long time), and by now they've gotten time to thoroughly think it through and do it right.  (I hope)
Biohazard Gun Survivor 2: Code Veronica
In Japan, the Resident Evil series is called "Biohazard".  If you've ever played the first Gun Survivor game for the PS, you're probably not excited for part 2.   I LOVE Resident Evil, and the storyline in Gun Survivor 2 was pretty good, but the gameplay sucked, and the English version didn't allow you to use the Guncom!   HOWEVER, what's interesting about this game is that it's being co-produced by Namco and Capcom!  From the little they show in the magazine, it doesn't look like much, but I really respect Namco, so maybe this is something we should look forward to?
Gunbarich
This is the next game in the Gunbird series, one of my all-time favorite side-scrolling shooters from Psikyo.  However, they don't show much, but from what I've seen, it looks like it's some kinda puzzle game.
BTW, this issue of Arcadia came with a cool Gunbarich poster!
Spike Battle
This is another new fighting game from Sega that's looking really interesting for one major reason... it's gonna feature a Cammy clone!  ^_^  This game is apparently the continuation of a little known game that I've forgotten the name of, but I think it had "Spike" in the name too.  Anyhow, the new character that looks like Cammy is a girl named Hikaru.  She's got long black pigtailed hair like Cammy, gloves like Cammy, and a bandage on her right cheek.  I think it's more than coincidence.  Her outfit consists of baggy blue jeans, a black sports bra, and a pair of goggles that she wears on her head (not over her eyes).  In other words, it looks like a dark Cammy mixed with Blue Mary.  Other than that, there's not much to say about this game yet...
Arcade Prizes
There are a lotta little toys and things coming out, but the most anticipated is the set of Capcom Gal Summer Paradise models which of course features Cammy!  (and Chun Li, Morrigan, Sakura, and Lilith)  That just came out last week, and I'm arranging to have a Cammy shipped to me ASAP!  Other than that, everything else looks pretty lame except for some Lupin III stuff.
Nakoruru game for the PC?
The back inside cover has an interesting ad for a Nakoruru PC game.  There are no details or pictures, but I'm really curious to see what that's all about.  It's not that I'm much of a Nakoruru fan, but I'm really interested in seeing what's happened to SNK after last all of last year's chaos...
