Cammy's the best!
The original Resident Evil is still one of my all-time favorite games.  I was SO excited for this recreation that I actually went out and bought a Gamecube.  Needless to say, my expectations are really high.   Although Capcom has disappointed me many times throughout the years, the RE series has almost always been top quality (except RE Survivor).  And from all that I'd seen and heard about the game, it seemed like it was gonna be everything I could have ever wanted.
Usually, when Capcom re-releases a game, it's a really cheap and half-assed 'upgrade'.  They're the masters of doing that.   Resident Evil, however, has been completely redone!!!  I think that's awesome.   I really hope this inspires more companies to do the same.  Hey, could you imagine a completely recreated version of Final Fantasy 7?!  Anyhow, since the first RE is without a doubt one of the all-time great games, it's really good that they brought it up to modern standards.

Day One - May 1, 2002
Yahoo, the day I've been waiting for is finally here!  Unfortunately, I was so busy all day that I couldn't get home to check out RE until the end of the day >_<   Anyhow, I finally got home and played through about the first 1/2 hour of the game.   Since I'm sure a lot of you are interested in hearing about it, I'm doing a little report for you.
First of all, this game may be kinda hard to find.   Since I'm in the game business now, I get inside info, and here's some news about RE for the GC... Capcom only shipped 20%!  The next batch probably won't be out for at least another week.  That sucks, but I've got my copy, so I'm happy.
Anyhow, the game is absolutely stunning!  The new intro CG movie is as good as you could imagine.  But, it's the new in-game graphics that are REALLY stunning.  There's so much more detail that you find yourself looking around in awe and forgetting that there are monsters hiding behind every corner.  Check out this in-game picture...  There are also a lotta other little details that make it all feel so much more real, but it's the lighting that really impresses me (lighting outside, swinging chandeliers, etc).
Another thing that I've noticed from the little bit I've played, is that there are a lot of new areas to the game.  It's still basically the same mansion, but things are placed a little differently, and there are many new doors.   I wonder where they'll lead to... and what's gonna try to kill me when I get there!
So far, I only have 2 complaints.  First, the controls seem to be pretty bad.  Over the years, a lot of people have hated RE's controls, but I was okay with it.  However, this time it seems a little too sensitive.  I can't walk a straight line... I looks like I'm drunk!  And the 2nd complaint is that the game seems incredibly hard.  I'm getting sick of games that are so hard that it takes all the fun out.  Since I haven't played too much yet, I'm hoping that I'll get used to it, and it'll be okay.
That's it for now,  please check back again if you're interested in hearing a little more about how things are going.  I'll write a new report every few days...
Part 2 - May 6, 2002
Sorry!  I'd meant to update this page a little more often, but I had a little crisis, so there wasn't much time to play games.  I thought I'd already be done with Jill's game, and into Chris's game by now...
Anyhow, I have progressed further, but I'm barely out of the mansion, so there's obviously a lot left to do.  Since my last review, I've got a much better feel for the game.  First of all, I'll take back my complaint about the controls being bad.  Apparently it was just me, and I needed some time to get used to playing RE again.
However, I still hold that the game is insanely hard!!   At first, there are 2 options on game difficulty:  "Mountain Climb" and "Hiking".  That's supposed to be Normal and Easy.  Normal is NOT normal!  I got sick of it, so I started over on "Hiking" (Easy) mode.   I'm kinda ashamed since I've played all the RE games and never had any trouble, but this game is crazy, and it just wasn't fun getting killed so much.  Easy mode seems much more 'normal' to me.
The new RE is still as impressive as I thought it was at first.  I can't believe how good the sound and the graphics are!!  And there really are A LOT of new areas and modifications to the original mansion.  I never thought there would be so many new places to explore!  Although I know the original RE inside and out, this game still feels exciting.  At the same time it's familiar and all-new.
I don't wanna give any spoilers if you haven't played yet, but I do wanna give you a few specific details.
Graphics:  I guess this picture pretty much shows you how amazing it is.  But what you can't see are all the lighting effects, reflections, dust, etc.  And the new areas...
New Areas:  The most obvious new areas are probably the 2 in the main hall.  Halfway up the stairs to the 2nd floor there's a door kinda hidden in the mural, and that leads out to a graveyard and a really freaky underground crypt.  And under the staircase is a gate that leads down under the mansion.   They haven't opened for me yet, but it sounds like there's a lady in chains down there somewhere.
Difficulty:  A regular old zombie used to take a few shots to kill, but now you can easily unload 10 shots into 'em, and they still come at you.  And if you don't blow off their head (VERY rarely happens now), or burn their bodies (new to this RE), they'll come back to life stronger and faster than ever!  I can't imagine what it'll be like when the Hunters are unleashed...
Storyline:  The original had one of the greatest storylines of all time, but this one's even better!  They've done a much more thorough job this time around, and on top of that, they've added some new things.   I'm maybe 1/3 to 1/2 done with the game, and I'm really excited to see how the rest is gonna go.  I think I know, but there's enough change to make it almost as exciting as it was the first time I played!
Part 3 - May 6, 2002
I'd never have thunk that it would take me almost 2 weeks to play through Resident Evil, but I've had 2 crisis that have kept me distracted.  Nevertheless, I worked on the game when I had time, and I'm finally done with it.
I've actually only played through Jill's game, and it took me 7 hours and 5 minutes.  I played through it on "Hiking" mode (aka Easy mode), and it turned out to be a bit too easy.  Nevertheless, it was fun, and I'm in the game more for graphics and storyline than a challenge.  After finishing, I started over on "Mountain Climb" mode (aka Normal mode), and the game doesn't seem nearly as difficult now.  I guess I was all wrong about it being too hard.   Maybe I just wasn't used to the controls?  It's still harder than it used to be, but I guess I was wrong.  I WAS WRONG!
Anyhow, now that I'm all done, I gotta say that I'm pretty much impressed by every single aspect of the Resident Evil re-make!  Graphics are obviously MUCH better.  But not only that, the storyline has been greatly improved as well.  The new areas and plot twists really made this game better, and it also helped an old fan like me keep excited and wondering what was coming next.  If you're and old fan, you gotta pick this game up... even if it means you gotta get a Gamecube too!   And if you've never played, you've missed out on too much alreayd... to go get yourself a copy today (and a Gamecube if don't have one yet).
I'll be starting Chris's game tonight.  I hope it doesn't take me as long to finish his game as it did Jill's.  I'll write another update when I finish his game...
Part 4 - May 29, 2002
Whoa, almost a month has gone by since the release of this game!  And, I still haven't finished Chris's game.  I got about 1/2 though, but then I stopped playing for a while.  Anyhow, all I can really say about Chris's game is that it's kinda boring compared to Jill's.  It seems pretty obvious that this RE was made to fit Jill.  The original RE really had 2 separate games for Chris & Jill, but now it seems like Chris is playing in Jill's game because his walkthrough is more or less exactly the same.  And, his storyline is a little bit less interesting so far.  But all in all, it's still fun!  Whenever I get around to finishing up his game, I'll write down my final thoughts... but by that time you probably won't care because you've already played it yourself!  ^_^
