Although Salzburg is only 1 hour by train from Mama Heissinger's hometown
in Germany (our next stop), we wanted to take the 7 hour train ride through the Alps to
get there. And it was absolutely beautiful! Besides being the hometown of Wolfgang Amadeus
Mozart (yes, we toured the "Mozartarium"), Salzburg is a wonderful city
jam-packed with sights, experiences, and shopping! No wonder it's one of the region's top
tourist destinations. |
|
This picture doesn't do our hotel room justice - purple velvet curtains with black
fur trim, leather bed, purple and zebra velvet covers, and a floor lamp fashioned
from some giant spiral horn... whoa! Kinda tacky, but a great hotel
nevertheless. The top floor of the hotel, which was a rooftop restaurant, had
a beautiful view of the city (see the picture directly below) |
Another picture from the hotel. We called the hotel the "fun house" because it
was so old that all the walls, floors, and ceilings were crooked and weird. As
you can see from this picture in the hall, Stefan had a hard time getting around.
He even had to shower on his knees because the ceiling was too low.
Another thing that made this hotel "fun" were the odd decorations... it wasn't
just the room, the whole place was thoroughly strange! |
The view of beautiful downtown Salzburg from the rooftop of our hotel.

Jenny and the view down to the city from the Hohensalzburg Fortress. See
the castle on the hill in the picture to your left... that's where we are in this
picture. Click here to enlarge this picture! |
The view of the Alps from the back side of the fortress. |
Honeymooners! |
This is one of the Salzburg's famous shopping streets. Salzburg is know for its
wrought iron signs. Even McDonald's had one of these signs. |
A beautiful little courtyard in Salzburg. The city is filled with great little nooks
like this. We stopped for some ice cream at the little cafe to the left. It was
very hot in Salzburg, so we made frequent stops.
|
The Salzburg Cathedral. |
Inside the Salzburg Cathedral. We looked into every single church we passed
because they are not only beautiful, the thick stone walls make it cold as a cave!
Ahhhh! |
Jenny's back in the dressing room trying on a Dirndl, a traditional southern
German dress. It's the female counterpart to the man's lederhosen. She
spent almost 2 hours trying on outfits. Yes, she bought one, and yes, there
are pictures... later. Click here to enlarge this picture!

Just outside of the city is the amazing little palace of an Italian Bishop from 16xx
called "Hellbrun". He was fascinated with all things water, and he had
a strange
sense of humor. In this picture, you can see a deer head spraying water! The
whole place is filled with amazing fountains and tricks. Expect to get wet on
the tour. For more info, check out www.Hellbrun.at |
Also at Hellbrun is this model town square. In real life it's about 6 to 8 feet wide.
It's a filled with little moving people and music... all powered by water! The little
figures work, dance, and do all kinds of fun things.

This is an up-close picture of some of the figures. |
The bishop's picnic table. When his guests got a little drunk or tired, he could
pull a switch that would shoot water out of their chairs! All water comes fresh
from the natural springs nearby, so it was very cool and refreshing. Of course
the seat atthe end where he sat was nice and dry. |
Our last night in Salzburg, We were wandering around the gardens at
Mirabel Palace when we discovered a wonderful classical music concert
playing from the windows above us. It was probably Mozart. We sat in the
courtyard and enjoyed the free show. When it was over, a bunch of fancy
people came out and drove off in their expensive cars. |
A gutter waterspout on one of the buildings in Salzburg. We saw many others like
this, but none quite as nice. Stefan grew up seeing fun stuff like this all over
Europe... no wonder he has such an imagination. |
|
And that's it for the
Salzburg, Austria portion of the honeymoon.... next stop Geisenhausen,
Germany! |
